As usual, an unusal year in Barrow. Air temperatures hovered around melting since the end of April, so the ice was significantly warmer than ususal at the beginning of melt pond development this year.
Hajo Eicken and Josh Jones went to Barrow in early June for laser level surveys of melt pond development. Hajo left, I arrived and together with Josh recovered the mass balance probe now with wind turbine and the radiometers of our Norwegain colleagues. Apart from laser-level surveys and removing instruments, we set up and tested a WiFi link to the mass balance site (and I sent my first email from there) and took under-ice photos.
